January 2017 Update

The first few weeks of January were hectic and packed with several hours of prep in order to open the school on time. Thanks to many local and foreign volunteers who lent a helping hand, the work was completed timely and efficiently. On January 5th we distributed uniforms to excited children, many of whom donned their shirts as soon as they received them. On Friday the 13th we held our opening kick off party. Due to torrential downpours it got off to a late start. Eventually the sun came out and the students enjoyed snacks, games and having their face painted.

The morning of January 16th volunteers arrived at 05:40 in the middle of thunderstorm to prepare for the first day of school. Despite putting the porridge on to cook at 06:00, it was not ready until nearly 11:00; however, the children were happy to be learning and they did not mind the late breakfast.

We survived the first two weeks of school without running water! After the purchase and instillation of a water tank, the building of a tank stand, and many trips to the water department in town, we finally have running water and working bathrooms. The general workers are pleased that they no longer have to spend their days manually filling the toilets with water.

The month ended with the class four teacher Mwaka Mushabati, welcoming her baby girl into the world on January 29th. She gave Samantha the honour of naming her newborn daughter and after much deliberation she decided on the name Lydia.

Throughout the month we said goodbye to our Australian volunteers Jess, Nash and Ramzi who we thank for all the time and effort they put into the school during their time in Livingstone. We also want to thank Abdallaa Berry who dedicated many hours this month to helping with the plumbing, water tank, gate, and various other tasks.

We have four new volunteers from Sweden coming this month, and one returning volunteer from the Netherlands. They will each be placed in a classroom to work alongside the teacher in teaching a class. The teachers will be starting after school clubs with the kids that will include a Sports Club, Scripture Club, and a Culture Club.
